Despite its aesthetic contrast to some of the Boston brand’s hottest current commodities, the vintage basketball model continues to drop off its typically simplistic colorways every so often, still a street-valid way to tinker your rotation for summer.
There are certainly divergences from the “default” layout that imprints like Aime Leon Dore made famous around the pandemic, but the “True Red” New Balance 550 at hand still wears an “close-enough” scheme loud and proud. Neutral shades do the heavy lifting, from white perforated leather to the grey suede mudguard to the eggshell outsole. Rather than relying on one accent shade to liven up the profile, you instead get a two-for-one, protruding fire red through the “N” logo on the quarter while leaving the collar to a wine red.
