Matt Varga Now more than two decades into their relationship with adidas, there are few lanes that Y-3 hasn’t tackled with the Three Stripes. However, every now and then, the Japanese fashion label manages to surprise, trotting out their elevated touch in a vertical shockingly left unexplored. With few representatives of tennis in the Y-3 catalog, their latest adidas collection accomplishes exactly that, taking over two bonafide performance models.
It’s the Barricade and Ubersonic in focus here, two silhouettes more likely to be spotted on the court in earnest than deployed in any lifestyle outfit. On the Ubersonic, thethe changes are easily seen, both in the broadest strokes with a refined off-white/black colorway, and in the finer details with distressed Three Stripes branding on the lateral side, further flourished with the Yohji Yamamoto signature on the heel counter. For the Barricade, the Y-3 touch is lighter, almost entirely focused on the palettes utilized. That same neutral-toned look for the Ubersonic takes over one Barricade, while its counterpart delivers a mustard yellow and black that relies on more vibrant coloring.
Though the inclusion of Y-3 is eye-raising on its own merits, note that this is part of a wider collaborative push within adidas to flesh out their tennis roster. Indeed, Brain Dead previewed their own Barricade 13 earlier in Paris, those first looks coming in close proximity to the adidas x CLOT collection that thoroughly explored tennis club aesthetics.
The adidas Y-3 Tennis Fall/Winter collection makes landfall on August 15th; the Barricade carries a $220 sticker price in its two colorways, while the Ubersonic clocks in at $200.
