Kicks like the New Balance 204L and the New Balance 2000 will almost undoubtedly be the highlights once the “of the year” mill begins turning its wheels. By contrast, Boston products like the New Balance 9060 and New Balance 2002R have shifted from holding that status in past years to becoming models that appeal to the general consumer. That remains as the New Balance 2002R brews a “Black Coffee” look that’s just surfaced.

From a design perspective, neither the “Arid Stone” nor the “Black Coffee” are too surprising to see within the context of New Balance, aligning with the dominance of neutral shades within their catalog. If anything, it’s the light/dark, top/bottom split is the choice that does the most heavy lifting here, creating an unexpected contrast look for the reliable runner.

The New Balance 2002R “Black Coffee” should be hitting NB.com and partnering retailers in the coming weeks. Retail remains at $145.
