Andrew Rizzo For more than twenty years, Nike and Oregon’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital have partnered on patient-designed footwear to raise funds for the hospital, creating one of the most celebrated and universally loved traditions in the sneaker world. This year’s lineup features an Air Force 1 crafted by ten-year-old Oli Fasone-Lancaster, who turned his love for food into a playful design filled with silverware graphics, plate-inspired details, and a full serving of veggies. And Nike had even more cooking behind the scenes.
As a second course, Nike teamed up with Oli’s favorite restaurant, Chipotle, for a first-of-its-kind alternate Air Force 1 made just for him. Diagnosed with cancer in kindergarten, Oli created a tradition of celebrating the end of each treatment with his go-to Chipotle meal. To honor that ritual, Nike and Doernbecher surprised him with this one-off creation.
Chipotle regulars will recognize the references right away. Metallic Silver overlays mimic the bottom of the chain’s burrito bowl packaging, green Swooshes channel guacamole, and Chipotle logos appear on the outer tongue and heel. The insoles borrow the print from Chipotle’s brown to-go bags, and Oli’s exact order shows up on the inner tongue. The heel tab reads “Oli’s Order #572,” marking the 572 laps Oli walked around Doernbecher’s oncology unit during treatment, a full marathon. The outsoles read “Chipotle Is My Life,” calling back to the now-legendary Vine clip that still lives rent-free on the internet.
The packaging is just as thoughtful. Chipotle, Nike, and Doernbecher delivered the pair in a custom box styled after a Chipotle bowl, complete with brown paper filler and a fork shaped like a Swoosh.
This Chipotle x Nike Air Force 1 will not release to the public, but Oli’s Doernbecher Air Force 1 will arrive later this winter as part of Nike’s latest Doernbecher collection.
