The New Balance 2002R Experiments With A “Black/Silver”

What more can we say about the New Balance 2002R? In some ways, the model has followed the lifespan of the competing Nike Dunk Low, a genuine hype proposition toward the start of the decade before receding into a far more readily accessible status in the years since. That said, there’s still room for Boston designers to nail a standout edition given the right blocking scheme.

No doubt that the Boston brand dabbling in black and grey isn’t reason enough to stop the presses, but it’s the application of those shades that’s caught our attention. By enveloping the shoe in an upper/lower split where nocturnal suede dominates the top notes, it creates a striking overall profile, particularly with the glittery branding interruption at the quarter. Solid grey mesh one layer below and another dose of chrome in the overlays in between ensures this isn’t too far out of the NB comfort zone, but this colorway does well to find a middle ground between blending with most outfits and enough intrigue to catch onlookers’ eyes.

This New Balance 2002R is likely to hit NewBalance.com and partnering retailers sometime in the coming weeks, commanding its usual $145 retail price.
