Credit where credit is due: part of the reason that the “sneaker loafer” grew to such an inescapable status is due to the efforts of New Balance. While the 1906L was a divisive, acquired taste upon its initial reveal, it’s gone on to become easily the most recognizable of a crowded category. Moreover, it demonstrated that the American giant has a genuine asset in a perspective where their staple shoes can’t ever be too precious to take a big swing with.
At consecutive Paris Fashion Weeks, the brand has eased another entrant in the formal-meets-casualwear realm. While the 1906L took a commodity fans and the general public were well accustomed to, the New Balance 1809A continues to trickle out as consumers are only barely comfortable with the base runner, only seen so far in select mainline colorways and via an Action Bronson collaboration. Despite that switch-up in cadence, the rollout continues unfettered, as images of the Comme des Garçons New Balance 1890A hit the net.
Of the two editions on tap, the murdered-out arrangement is the less surprising, leaning on CDG’s love for monochromatics with textured suede and pebbled leather, only broken up by ABZORB branding at the heel and a CDG badge on the tongue. More of a shock is a “Wheat” style arrangement, pinning tan suede comprehensively throughout the upper before shifting to tan and orange in its OG 1906 platform. Of the two, it’s far easier to get accustomed to the compositional notes the model offers in this one; etched overlays depart pretty radically from the lifestyle version of this shoe, leaving the sole tech as the real connective tissue between both “1890s” we’ve seen so far.
Notably, shots of the all-black Comme des Garçons x New Balance 1890A trickle out via a retailer, a potential indication that this pair’s debut could come sooner rather than later. For now, launch details are largely opaque. Get familiar with these two variations via the shots below and watch our Sneaker Release Dates page for more info as it comes.
