Andrew Rizzo Due in no small part to a certain pop megastar, adidas has had Puerto Rico on lock in recent years. Today’s headline, however, doesn’t originate on the island itself, but rather in the heavily Puerto Rican city of Jersey City, NJ, where local boutique Sneaker Room is showing love to its community both near and far with an Adistar Control 5 that’s just as lively as the people who inspire it.
Founded by Suraj Kaufman, whose background includes giveback initiatives in Puerto Rico, India, and his hometown of Jersey City, Sneaker Room delivers a clean colorway inspired by the Puerto Rican flag. A striking blue mesh base is complemented by red stripes, while white and reflective silver land across the overlays. The tongue stands out as the most notable detail, featuring nine interchangeable velcro patches inspired by Puerto Rican cultural symbols. The outsole goes in a completely different direction, featuring a colorful mix of green, yellow, blue, and red.
This continues a run of Adistar Control 5 collaborations, following projects with Larry June, Shake James, and most notably Unheardof’s “Piggy Runner” collection.
