Andrew Rizzo Nike has another massive anniversary looming. Air Max Day 2027 will mark the 40th anniversary of Tinker Hatfield’s Air Max 1, and by extension, the Air Max category itself, a massive milestone for both Nike and the sneaker world at large. Jordan Brand’s sprawling “Banned” campaign from 2025 set a precedent for just how big these celebrations can get, and though the date is still a ways off, we’re already uncovering some of the ways Nike plans to mark the occasion.
Here we have the Nike Air Max “Lost Samples” pack, featuring sample and/or concept-inspired takes on arguably the three best Air Max models ever made. The Air Max 1 leads the charge with a spin on its original “Sport Red” makeup, adding blue accents on the tongue, upper eyelet, and outsole. The Air Max 90 follows suit with a pre-distressed “Infrared” colorway, complete with a scuffed mudguard and faded midsole wedge. The Air Max 95, meanwhile, riffs on “Neon” with a black interior and orange accents on the lace loops and Air bubbles.
Nike’s last major Air Max category milestone, the 30th anniversary in 2017, gave us the debut of the Air Vapormax, an innovation that, while not exactly front and center today, played a massive role for the brand in the years that followed. It would be very much in character for Nike to use the line’s 40th anniversary as a launchpad for its next big Air innovation, though the brand’s past few Air Max Day silos have struggled to break into the mainstream.
The Nike Air Max “Lost Samples” pack is due out Spring 2027, potentially in late March to align with the brand’s pinnacle Air Max Day festivities. See detailed pics taken from Paris Fashion Week below if you’re set on copping.
