Nike Adds Alexander Arnault To Its Board Of Directors

Nike has named Alexandre Arnault to its Board of Directors, bringing a member of one of the world’s most powerful luxury families into the company at a particularly consequential moment for the Swoosh.

Effective September 15th, Arnault joins Nike’s 12-member board. The 34-year-old currently serves as Deputy CEO of Moët Hennessy and previously held leadership positions at Tiffany & Co. and RIMOWA, all part of the sprawling LVMH empire controlled by his father, Bernard Arnault.

The move comes on the heels of some stunning news for Nike: the company is being removed from the S&P 100 after nearly two decades in the index. Its market capitalization has fallen dramatically from its 2021 peak of more than $260 billion, a striking decline for a company that still generates tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue and possesses the most recognizable logo in sports.

Adding someone intimately familiar with the LVMH ecosystem at a moment when Nike is trying to restore premium positioning and cultural desirability feels like a step in the right direction, particularly as the company looks to restore confidence among shareholders. However, during his time at RIMOWA and Tiffany & Co., Arnault helped modernize heritage luxury brands using many of the same principles Nike had already mastered: high-profile collaborations, limited-edition products, celebrity partnerships, and a closer relationship with streetwear and youth culture. In some ways, Arnault helped make luxury behave more like Nike.

Nike’s recent struggles have included strained wholesale relationships, an over-reliance on familiar franchises, and widespread discounting, while competitors have gained ground across performance running and lifestyle. Luxury offers an interesting counterpoint. Its strongest brands carefully manage distribution, scarcity, storytelling, collaborations, celebrity relationships, and pricing to maintain desire despite enormous scale and near-universal recognition.

Nike was once among the best companies in the world at executing these luxury principles. For decades, the Swoosh helped convince the fashion world that sneakers could be aspirational objects. Most importantly, Nike never needed to call itself a luxury brand because consumers already treated its most coveted products like one.

Ironically, Nike’s problem may have been leaning too heavily into that playbook as competitors found opportunities to gain ground where Nike had traditionally been strongest: performance sport and lifestyle culture.
