Matt Varga J. Cole is already the king of the side quest. From fan run-ins in cities across the country on a nondescript bike to stints in foreign pro leagues, the Fayetteville native has shown that fame or what’s typically expected from musicians of his stature won’t stop him from leading his life the way he desires. Evidently, that branches into the realm of footwear as well. Teased on and off for several years, the first-ever independent J. Cole sneaker is imminent: the Dreamer Indie 5000.
Though certainly not every rapper ends up with a shoe deal, those who have reached his upper-echelon status typically have looked into their own footwear partnerships at some point. That stretches back to the days of Jay-Z’s Reebok S. Carter or the recently revived Reebok G-Unit, all the way through PUMA’s relationship with A$AP Rocky or Nike’s exploits with some of Cole’s peers: Travis Scott’s enduring empire, Drake’s NOCTA label, or Kendrick Lamar’s handful of Cortez collabs.
To be sure, J. Cole tried that pathway at some point. He and PUMA put pen to paper at the start of the decade, producing two new silhouettes in the RS-Dreamer and the Dreamer 2, before their joint effort proved short-lived. His last release with the Big Cat came in 2021. Now under an independent label, his sneaker journey continues with the the Dreamer Indie 5000, reportedly in the works since that chapter closed.
J. Cole has been tight-lipped about any tooling details as this shoe has careened towards release, yet we do know that being made in Italy is core to its appeal. Ironically, our minds immediately jump to the Puma Blaze of Glory when shown this new design; it’s clear that retro basketball as a whole was top of mind. Synthetic overlays zig and zag across the uppers, carried through the sole unit as well.
The J. Cole x Dreamer Indie 5000 is confirmed to release in Fayetteville, North Carolina on September 23rd, though pricing and exact launch details are currently unknown.
