Discounting Michael Jordan, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will soon become just the second player ever to receive signature basketball sneakers under multiple Nike umbrellas, joining Dwyane Wade, who transitioned from Converse to Jordan Brand in the late 2000s. Back then, the move was made with optimistic thinking around capitalizing on Wade’s star power. Shai’s move, while we’re certainly excited to see how it takes shape, arrives seemingly out of necessity amid shockingly poor sales for the Converse brand at large.

While the Nike SHAI 002 is expected to debut sometime this season, the Converse SHAI 001 is continuing to carry the torch for now. Up next is the Converse SHAI 001 Lace Up “Flare,” dropping October 29th for $120. Regular readers might recall that this colorway first surfaced with Nike branding on the back via a post SGA shared from NBA Media Day, a pair he has since taken to wearing in games. The retail version stays in line with its predecessors, retaining the Converse star and chevron on the heel. The colorway is OKC-coded in a simple, agreeable way, with the titular Flare orange covering almost the entire shoe save for the laces and inner lining.
