When discussing “arms races” in sneakers, typically we’re referring to companies’ fight to push technology even further in their peak performance shoes. It’s the Nike Apex vs. the adidas Adios Pro EVO 3, ON’s Lightspray tech vs. Mizuno’s ultra-light materials. Yet a different sort of race to the top is also taking place, in which footwear brands have seemingly been on a quest to put together the most unbelievable side quests for their staple shoes. If you’ve been impressed by the Samba becoming a climbing shoe or the New Balance 1906R becoming a loafer, boy do we have something for you, as Nike debuts the “Air Max 90 Boat.”
Following in the footsteps of the Dunk’s mule journey or the Air Force 1’s formalized square toes, the Nike Air Max 90 strips away much of its iconic hardware for its life on deck. Though the general panel geometry and sole platform are intact, the upper switches into a textured tan suede and a raised apron makes an appearance on the toe. Leather laces and a similarly refined interior only further play into this gussied-up atmosphere.
Is the Nike Air Max 90 Boat going to be a centerpiece of the seasonal catalog, something that the brand is betting will drive hundreds of thousands in revenue? Well, they certainly wouldn’t turn that down, but likely not. The tongue-in-cheek aspect here is impossible to ignore. It’s either something that plays into your unorthodox style of dress or a gawdy conversation piece if it’s not.
The Nike Air Max 90 Boat shoe is expected to release sometime during the Spring 2027 window, placing its drop between January and the end of March. A $155 retail price is confirmed. Catch in-hand looks below.
