Although NIKE, Inc. doesn’t hide whenever it references itself across its line of products, it ostensibly leaves some examples to savvier sneaker enthusiasts. The latest Nike Air Max 90 arguably falls into this category as it boasts a “Pure Platinum/Midnight Navy/Wolf Grey” reminiscent of the arrangement that appeared on the model’s “Silver Surfer” style from 2004.
An immediate glance at both pairs cement the two colorways as different, but choices for the toe boxes and mudguards are too similar to simply have left to coincidence. Greyscale components throughout the 31-year-old design’s upper is accompanied by “Midnight Navy” and deep red tones, the latter being isolate to the profile swooshes on the Marvel-inspired Air Max of yesteryear. Branding on the tongue label forgoes the vibrant blue of the potential muse in favor of a navy tone that doesn’t distract from its surroundings. Insoles don’t feature any Silver Surfer graphic, but they don a shimmering golden “NIKE AIR” logo. Underfoot, visible Airbags harken back to the 17-year-old colorway as they bring some eye-catching scarlet flair down below.
