Fresh off news that Virgil Abloh’s Off-White has conjured up 21 pairs of the Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1, Jun Takahashi’s UNDERCOVER has unveiled a trio of takes on Bruce Kilgore’s iconic design as part of its Spring/Summer 2022 collection.
In comparison to Abloh’s propositions, the Japanese designer’s work forgoes any vibrant yellow, green and red in favor of a predominantly greyscale palette. At least one all-over is utilized, but it’s done in an unassuming set of tones. What’s most eye-catching about UNDERCOVER’s Air Force 1 Low trio is the set of technical modifications applied to the silhouette. At quick glance, the Nike Sportswear classic doesn’t deter far from its standard build, but closer inspection reveals a TPU harness around the heel. Furthermore, a Nike Air Huarache-reminiscent inner-bootie has been added into the mix; the neoprene component is most visible on a silver and black pair, which also features a speckled midsole. Each style is stamped with the Japanese brand’s underlined “U” logo at the heel. Together, Takahashi’s updates ostensibly deliver a more secure fit, while propelling a near-40-year-old design into the next 40 years.
