Chitose Abe’s sacai x Nike LDVaporWaffle has remained busy over the past year, launching in a handful of colorways courtesy of the Japanese designer’s own doing. In late January, rumblings of the reimagined running model being further updated by Jean Paul Gaultier surfaced following news that Abe would take over the label’s Autumn/Winter 2020 Couture collection. Recently, the French brand opened pre-orders for two colorways of the trio’s collaborative sneaker.
A quick glance at the upcoming release reveals Nike Running heritage, but closer inspection reveals an even bigger departure from the performance-oriented, waffle-pattern-outsole-having sneakers of yesteryear. Under the triumvirate’s design, the layered silhouette becomes a mid-top option given more “DIY” flair via the exposed baseball glove-like leather seams that run all across the profiles and ankle. Calf leather, suede and mesh materials come together throughout the upper (which blend color palettes of previously-seen LDVaporWaffles), while the unstructured sole unit maintains its now-signature foam and rubber makeup. Lastly, co-branding appears on the tongue and sock-liner.
Enjoy images of the three-way collaboration ahead, and head over to sacai.jeanpaulgaultier.com to pre-order a pair; delivery is expected in September, likely to coincide with New York Fashion Week. A Nike SNKRS release may occur, but hasn’t been disclosed by any of the brands.
