It’s been 75 years since Jack “Jackie” Roosevelt Robinson broke professional baseball’s color barrier in the United States of America. To celebrate the occasion, NIKE, Inc. has produced a number of footwear options inspired by the famed Brooklyn Dodger.
In addition to a Nike Dunk Low clad in anniversary and Robinson-commemorating details, the North American sportswear behemoth has prepped a special edition of Ken Griffey Jr.‘s signature baseball cleat, the Air Griffey 1. Akin to the aforementioned basketball sneaker, the made-for-the-mound style dons a “Racer Blue” and “Coconut Milk” color combination across its upper, with the former tone landing atop handfuls of high-quality leather panels. Additionally, several quotes attributed to the Georgia-native are printed onto the vibrant blue-colored overlays. “42,” Robinson’s number, replaced Griffey Jr.’s “24” on the lockdown straps found near the collar. Visible Air Max cushioning is abandoned below in favor of a foam and enclosed Zoom Air combination set to deliver responsive cushioning on the baseball field. Lastly, aggressive spikes round out the pair.
