The New Balance 550 debuted in 1989 but found its footing in late 2020 with the help of Teddy Santis. As it continues to develop an identity of its own, the retro basketball silhouette keeps appearing in college-friendly styles.
Reminiscent of Aimé Leon Dore’s straightforward propositions, the newly-surfaced pair mostly indulges in a “colorless” arrangement that allows the subtlest of contrast to revel in the spotlight. Varying shades of blue and yellow around the heel evoke Marquette University’s team colors, though the wine-like red and sky blue that animate the collar and outsole, respectively, keep New Balance’s next 550 from faithfully matching the school’s athletics uniforms. Nevertheless, the mix of plain and eye-catching colors make for an old school aesthetic that’s still fresh today.
No firm NewBalance.com launch details have been disclosed by the brand, but that’s likely to change soon. In the meantime, enjoy official images of the pair ahead.
