The last handful of years have been favorable to New Balance, seeing some of their most iconic styles become “it” shoes. As the North American company looks ahead, it continues to reference its heritage, resulting in offerings like the WRPD Runner.
Rooted in familiarity, the New Balance WRPD Runner (read: “Warped Runner”) pushes the boundaries of what a traditional lifestyle silhouette from the brand looks like. Nontraditional lines are exaggeratedly sculpted in such a manner that old school design cues appear modern. The simple and refined upper fits in with other classics from New Balance’s archive, while stepping towards another 100 years of success.
“The WRPD Runner is a new concept driven by the unique space where style and performance meet,” said Charlotte Lee, senior footwear designer at New Balance, in an official press release for the sneaker. “[T]he sole is a warped expression of our pinnacle running technology, FuelCell. The fluid lines of the foam are blended with the abstract nature of futuristic design, evoking a strong sense of movement.”
FuelCell has appeared on some of the brand’s marquee running models of the last several years, as well as on the New Balance 990v6. An homage to running heritage also arrives via the color schemes that are expected to take on the WRPD Runner: vibrant blue and green animate panels on two upcoming pairs.
Enjoy detailed photos of the model’s inaugural styles ahead. The “Sea Salt” option launches via newbalance.com and select shops on August 16th for $150 USD.
