Japan’s affinity for New Balance product has been well-documented over the last 50 years. Country-exclusives and special collaborations have cemented the “Land of the Rising Sun” in the North American company’s history, with brands like WTAPS carrying the trend into the 2020s.
Previous efforts between Tetsu Nishiyama and the Boston-based brand have included the NB 992 and 990v2. Both styles were extremely limited, but the partnership’s next project – a New Balance 990v6 – may enjoy a different fate. Proudly “Made in USA,” the sneaker recently surfaced via leaked photos from Asia. Akin to its immediate predecessor, the WTAPS x NB 990v6 indulges in a grayscale finish across its breathable mesh and high-quality suede upper. Nishiyama’s pioneering label has its name stamped on the sockliner and spine, while the remainder of the shoe indulges in a relatively standard makeup. A panel around the heel is enlarged to fit unmissable “USA” text on the lateral side. Underfoot, FuelCell-assisted sole units deliver a comfortable ride and more grayscale-goodness.
Enjoy an early look at the pair ahead, as you wait for stateside newbalance.com launch details.
