Adsum’s adidas Samba Millennium Turns Back The Clock To 2009

Brooklyn-based masters of northeastern menswear Adsum have finally gotten their own adidas footwear collaboration: the Samba Millennium.

Long-time fans of the Three Stripes, the independent label has featured obscure models from the German sportswear behemoth in its lookbook throughout the years. To welcome the holiday season, Adsum has dusted off the adidas Samba Millennium, an indoor football (soccer) shoe that’s been discontinued for at least a decade. “We lucked out,” wrote Pete Macnee and Christian Rice in an exclusive email correspondence with Sneaker News. “[Three or four] years ago we were introduced to some people who worked at the Portland office of adidas and we put together a proposal that connected Adsum to adidas. We put the Millennium into that deck. It was quiet for a long time, but then we lucked by being put in touch with someone at adidas HQ that had a little more pull in making collaborations happen and were able to fire the idea back up.”

The adidas Samba may only be seen as a fashion choice by the masses, but Macnee and team understand the silhouette’s history in performance. For years, Adsum has participated in local soccer leagues, donning a tasteful white-and-black top that’s recently gotten attention due to the rise in the “Blokecore” trend. Its Samba Millennium unquestionably resembles the popular sneaker, but opts for a modern profile and reworked tooling for competitive performance on the indoor pitch. The collaboration’s “T” toe constitutes of a grey hairy suede the Northeasten label has dubbed “Nutmeg Beige” after the football move. The medium nap fabric complements the smooth leather that takes on the remainder of the upper. Profile 3-Stripes and Achilles’ Heel panels deviate in pitch-black contrast, bringing nubuck into that mix that’s intended to highlight Three Stripes branding from afar. Traditional adidas Equipment logos land on the top of the tongue, while standard “Samba” text on the lateral mid-foot is aptly replaced by golden, debossed “Adsum” logos. Underfoot, Adsum’s adidas Samba Millennium differs from the shoe’s more popular edition: a responsive foam works in-tandem with a tacky, semi-translucent gum outsole. A tough Torsion plate runs through the outsole’s center, which the Brooklyn label animates in red as another connection to adidas Football heritage: the Predator boot associated with David Beckham and others.

Adsum’s adidas Samba collaboration has been presented alongside the “Good for a Millennium” campaign. A clever play on the silhouette’s official name, the brand’s marketing efforts speaks to the silhouette’s timelessness: “[W]e styled with the shoe back in 2017 and it was good then, and it’s good now, and it will still be good when attention moves on. That’s why we say it’s ‘Good for a Millennium’…It’s an all-time shoe.” To this end, the campaign features the Samba Millennium in different time periods from that of Knights of the Round Table to present day.

A special launch for the Samba Millennium was held on Friday, November 6th, at a special event held by Adsum. Participants had to enter a lottery via the adidas CONFIRMED app. Come Thursday, November 16th, however, the sneaker will be available to the wider public via adsumnyc.com, presumably for $150 USD.
