You could make a strong case that no shoe evokes unofficial design themes with more frequency than the Nike Air Max 90. The Tinker Hatfield-designed shoe has worn several color palettes that are just as recognizable as the iconic silhouette itself in recent months, including a “Dunkin’ Donuts” pair, but sticking to the Beaverton brand’s core proposition, most tie-ins pertain to sports teams.
Through an all-black upper and “Speed Yellow” accents, this latest edition takes after Pittsburgh Pirates jersey colors. But sure, locals will tell you the shoes could just as easily suit the Steelers, Penguins, or plainly, the city as a whole given all the yellow bridges in the downtown area. Not for nothing, we just saw the release of a similar “Black/University Gold” Air Max 90 in late April.
When it comes to materials, the shoes wear a ballistic mesh base, nubuck quarter overlay, and traditional leather mudguard. The top portion of the “Nike Air” heel branding presents in white, while the rest of the shoe’s various branded elements carry the unofficial theme in “Speed Yellow.”
