Though their lifestyle sector has absolutely exploded in recent times, New Balance’s bread and butter remains in running. With the help of Action Bronson this summer, the Boston brand tacitly tipped off a retro effort for one of their most celebrated barefoot styles, the Minimus Trail. However, ICE STUDIOS is beating the NYC rapper to the punch, set to deliver the silhouette’s first collaboration in short order.
For our purposes, ICE STUDIOS has only been on our radar once before, minting an icy GEL-Kayano 14 back in 2022. The globetrotting collective, founded by Renell Medrano and based in both NYC and London, brings a similar playful atmosphere to this trail runner. Primary hits of red, blue and yellow dot around an off-white upper, planting the brand’s spell-out logo atop the wide checkered mesh. Underfoot is where things take a turn, splitting between deep brown traction and tan joinery in between.
Minted as New Balance’s response to the “barefoot running” movement as it picked up momentum at the dawn of the 2010s, the Minimus Trail crashed back onto the market as running is again picking up as a hobby. The growing number of people hitting the trail means there’s a wide demo for this collab pair, surprising as a “special edition” performance shoe may be on its face.
