As the “Sneaker of the Year” discourse rages on, let’s take a moment to show some love to the fine folks at New Balance’s Flimby factory. While Made in England sneakers are unlikely to make any top ten lists, you could argue that no sneaker sub-label has had a stronger year in 2025 than the Made in England team. A huge part of that success can be attributed to the New Balance 991v2, which truly came into its own through strong collaborations and a steady stream of well-executed general releases (with very few misses, if any).
As the sun sets on the model’s 2025 run, New Balance is dropping a new style dubbed “Raven” for the Holiday shopping season. Sharing a name and aesthetic with an upcoming New Balance 1500, the sneaker features a black mesh base, dark green underlays, and premium grey nubuck across the upper. Light violet hits on the lining, midsole, and New Balance logos add a welcome touch of color, creating a balance between muted and pastel tones reminiscent of Stray Rats’ collaborations with the Boston brand.
First released in late 2023, the New Balance 991v2 is an updated version of the original New Balance 991 from the early 2000s. Visible ABZORB cushioning is featured in both the forefoot and heel, a technology the Boston brand is currently expanding through new models like the 2000 and 2010. The 991v2 also incorporates a lower heel-to-toe drop and an updated shape with a wider toe box for improved comfort. Like other Made in England and Made in USA models, the 991v2 runs about a half size large (your usual Nike Air Force 1 size should work for reference).
The New Balance 991v2 “Raven” drops during the Holiday 2025 shopping season, meaning sometime between now and the end of December. Expect pairs to appear at retailers overseas before landing on the New Balance website. The sneaker carries the model’s standard $250 MSRP — a high price indeed, but one that reflects the craftsmanship and quality synonymous with Made in England production.
