The Nike KD 5 Elite Is Returning In Summer 2027

Nike Basketball is reaching deeper into Kevin Durant’s signature footwear archive, with Sneaker News confirming that the KD 5 Elite will make its return in Summer 2027. Originally introduced in April 2013, the performance-focused silhouette is set to return in at least two colorways, including an EYBL edition and a DMV edition, each priced at $190.

The KD 5 Elite was part of Nike Basketball’s ambitious Elite Series, an initiative that saw the brand’s flagship signature models receive hyper-charged upgrades designed specifically for the demands of postseason basketball. Rather than simply introducing new colorways, Nike reengineered its signature footwear with enhanced materials, support systems, and performance technology, creating premium alternatives to the standard models worn throughout the regular season.

However, while the LeBron 10 Elite and Kobe 8 Elite were recognizable evolutions of their respective base models, the KD 5 Elite was practically an entirely new shoe. Its dramatically altered construction and design bore little resemblance to the standard KD 5, making it one of the more radical transformations of the Elite Series era.

In addition of to transforming the KD 5 Elite from a high to low, Nike added a carbon fiber heel counter and shank for lightweight stability, Dynamic Flywire cables reinforced with Kevlar aramid fibers for lockdown, an articulated foam tongue helped reduce lace pressure and provide impact protection, and a caged Nike Zoom unit in place of the visible Air Max unit.

It’s unclear if Nike will introduce modern performance updates for the 2027 release, although it seems likely that updated Zoom bags and foam will be part of the 2027 iteration. The pair pictured above is the 2013 edition (images via SLAM).

Again, Sneaker News can confirm two colorways for the upcoming return: the multi-colored EYBL edition referencing Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League on April 22nd, 2027 (tentative), and a new DMV edition that may reference the KD 5 “DMV” aka “Mumbo Sauce” on June 11th, 2027. The Nike KD 5 Elite is expected to release during Summer 2027 for $190.
