Back in 1987, Tinker Hatfield revolutionized sneaker design by introducing visible Air on the Nike Air Max 1. Three decades later, the groundbreaking technology has been reimagined across models like the Air Max 270 and Air Max 97 – ranking in first and ninth, respectively, on the Best-Selling Sneakers of 2019 list (U.S.). And while an upcoming Air Max 1 Daisy breathes new life into the 33-year-old silhouette, the DNA CH.1 “Purple Punch” is rooted in the past – 1991 to be exact.
As the second installment of the Nike DNA Series, the Air Max trainer pays homage to a fellow Hatfield-designed gamechanger: The Air Huarache. Instead of borrowing its successor’s never-before-seen sock-like, neoprene construction, however, the Air Max 1 faithfully transplants the Huarache’s “White/Black/Purple Punch” ensemble. The yin-and-yang palette completely takes over bottom halves, while also covering much of upper; Just like on the ’91 muse, the marquee hue adds of-the-era flair to the sock liner, midfoot mesh and heel overlay. Elsewhere, tri-colored tongue labels are faithfully recreated, though they denote this pair as an “AIR MAX.”
The Air Max 1 DNA “Purple Punch” is hitting retailers solo on March 13th for $130 USD. It’s rumored to drop on Nike.com with the Air Huarache Sport Blue for $250 USD on March 12th. In either case, check out images of and a store list for the Air Max 1 here below.
