Jovani Hernandez Skepta may not be considered a global fashion icon like some of the people with whom he rubs elbows, but the British grime force deserves some credit for trends that’ve inundated social media feeds over the last six years. In 2017, NIKE, Inc. took notice of the Boy Better Know-frontman’s presence, inviting him to create a sneaker inspired by the original Nike Air Tuned Max. For their latest partnership, the Tottenham-native and Swoosh have dipped the Air Max Tailwind V in an eye-catching “Chrome Blue”.
Heading to retailers across Asia and Europe on April 2nd, the newest installment in the “Sk Air” series draws inspiration from the natural world. Driven by the idea of “creative rebirth,” the pair features a sublimated print depicting butterfly wings underneath the Tailwind V’s iconic molded overlays. The remainder of the shoe favors a roadman-approved “Black” aesthetic, but the structural divider towards the heel introduces a shimmering silver into the mix. Air Max cushioning underfoot forgoes any “Chrome Blue” flair, but the titular tone appears on the outsole. Lastly, subtle use of iridescence around the heel nods to Skepta’s thermographic cover art from the “Ignorance Is Bliss” album (2019).
