Jovani Hernandez In early February, AFEW announced that it had created a one-of-one ASICS GEL-Lyte III under the “Beauty Of Imperfection” banner in order to raise money for the Children’s and Young People’s Hospice Regenbogenland in Düsseldorf, Germany. Having raised over 13,000€ (approx. $14,781.71 USD), the longtime partners have shared that another iteration of their “B.O.I.” collaboration will drop on February 26th.
Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, the upcoming GEL-Lyte III features a number of “unrefined” or “imperfect” embellishments. “Polar Shade” overtakes most of the suede construction across the upper, though “Seagrass” animates the iconic tiger stripes on the lateral profile. Pastel purple covers the lower heel’s wraparound panel (made up of mismatched materials), while ASICS‘ tried-and-proven tooling solution underfoot opts for an “aged” aesthetic. The aforementioned sidewall logos boast a “wear away” finish that allow for unique textures to develop as the shoes are worn (a stitched-on version still exists on the medial side). A callback to Wabi-Sabi appears between both shoes’ spines, as well as on the cork insoles. Akin to their previous joint-efforts, AFEW and ASICS’ commitment to quality extends onto the leather heel mold, a first for the split-tongued silhouette.
