Ten Can’t Miss Sneaker News Headlines From April 30th to May 6th

Death in any context is tragic. Within the sneaker space, the loss of life has widely been seen at unfortunate storefront campouts, Facebook group meetups and other outings. Over the last week, the world received news that Peter Moore, designer of the Air Jordan 1 among other tings, passed away. He was 78 years old.

This hobby, passion, interest and job of ours often serves as an escape from the day-to-day and the things associated to it. So when death creeps into the sneaker space, it’s completely normal to be shaken up, to feel as though one’s refuge isn’t actually that. Moore had been involved in footwear since at least the 1980s, an era that also saw him create the Nike Dunk. Therefore, his death may seem more palpable given that he was approaching 80 years old, but what about Virgil Abloh’s passing away from November 2021? A retail launch for the Off-White x Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1 was teased over the last seven days, reminding casual and savvy consumers alike of the tragic loss of one of the most promising creators of products of the last 10 years. He was 41 years old.

Although news outlets like ours tend to cover the “big names,” it’s not lost on us that there are countless unsung heroes responsible for this thing we enjoy, many of whom are no longer with us. The Bronx and Baltimore hustlers that made the Air Force 1 the most desirable item on the block; the couple that couldn’t get rid of deadstock inventory in the face of a growing sneaker business; the factory workers that’ve sweat over the manufacturing of a Reebok or New Balance shoe; sneaker enthusiasts that began a blog without having a clue of how to run a media empire because they wanted to share their knowledge with the world. This thing called “sneakers” doesn’t make sense to everyone, but that doesn’t make it lose its value. On the contrary, one could argue that this lack of widespread understanding and acceptance is the very reason why so many of us hold on that much tighter. For some of its, sneakers is most of what we have.

For a look at all that and more, including Yeezys, check out our top headlines from April 30th to May 6th ahead.
