Designed by the legendary Bruce Kilgore, the Nike Air Force 1 occupies a special place in the heart of sneaker culture. And while there’s never a bad time to celebrate such an icon, 2022 provides even further cause, as the year marks the silhouette’s 40th Anniversary.
Over the course of the last four decades, Nike has honored the Air Force 1 with countless inline styles and collaborations, from the beloved “Triple White” colorway to quite a few joint efforts with the likes of Supreme. The releases are sure to ramp up in the years to come, too, lending further credence to the perennial’s status as one of the most iconic shoes of all-time.
To commemorate the Air Force 1’s 40th, we’re spotlighting some of the sneaker’s best selling and most interesting releases of the last few years, all of which are currently available via eBay Sneakers.
Over the course of the last 40 years, the Air Force 1 has amassed a wealth of both inline and collaborative releases. And while many have their own favorites for “Best of All-Time,” no pair can truly rival the silhouette’s most classic GRs in the way of ubiquity. The “Triple White” and “Triple Black,” for instance, truly exemplify the definition of perennial, as they’ve remained relevant for multiple decades. Similarly, the “Triple Red” retains a dedicated following of its own, sitting comparatively high on the list of the shoe’s best selling colorways.
Supreme continues to be one of Nike’s longest standing collaborative relationships, having produced coveted releases together as early as 2002. And in the two decades since then, we’ve seen the legendary streetwear label dress up the Air Force 1 several times. But the brand wouldn’t truly solidify their connection to the silhouette until 2020, when they crafted a run of simple, Box Logo clad colorways that would return season after season. The collaboration is available in “Triple White, “Triple Black,” and “Wheat,” all of which nod to some of the shoe’s most iconic GRs.
As arguably the most recognized sneaker in the world, the Air Force 1 has amassed an unrivaled following, with fans of all ages and cultures identifying with Bruce Kilgore’s design. The “presidential” shoe has a tough reputation thanks to its upbringing in cities like Baltimore and New York, but it’s never been afraid to get playful. Limited edition styles for Valentine’s Day have become best-sellers year after year, while special collaborations for Lola Bunny and UNO have proven successful amongst kids and adults alike. Simply put, the Air Force 1 is the perfect canvas.
From concrete playgrounds to runways overseas, Bruce Kilgore’s Air Force 1 has married sports heritage with fashion attitude like very few other sneaker have. And because the model’s so versatile, it’s allowed for institutions from Stüssy to Comme des Garçons SHIRT to reimagine the pair in a way that’s experimental, but still speak to audiences. The better half of the last decade for the AF-1 can’t be told without Virgil Abloh’s Off-White, which took Kilgore’s design into art museums and French ateliers. The crazier part?: There’s still a lot more for the Air Force 1 to accomplish, and new and old collaborators will surely be a part of that process.
