Teddy Santis delivered the first look at the New Balance 990v6 in classic grey on April 5th, 2021. Although the model has been expected to debut before 2022 ends to coincide with the 990’s 40th anniversary, little has been disclosed by the brand in regards to the sneaker’s release date. Nevertheless, pairs have been popping up overseas throughout the last nine months, suggesting a debut is scheduled.

Vastly more subdued than the collaboration Action Bronson teased in an appearance on All Elite Wrestling, the upcoming option indulges in New Balance heritage. Akin to the 990v5 before it, the 990v6 boasts a sportier look than most of its predecessors. Mesh and suede make up the style’s upper, while the profile “N” logos take on a ribbed finish that nods to the New Balance 990v3. Branding is kept similar to the last few successors to 1982’s 990 silhouette, but text on the top of the tongue features red-colored “v6” distinction.

Although the model’s upper delivers a more modern aesthetic, the New Balance 990v6’s sportier look is achieved by the sole unit underfoot. For starters, the midsole is contoured and chiseled unlike previous models, with stability components at the heel donning a series of curves and lines evoking speed. Additionally, the midsole is free of any “ENCAP” branding, suggesting the design has moved on from the tried-and-proven cushioning solution. Instead, the 990v6 boasts FuelCell foam just as New Balance’s top-of-the-line performance running sneaker (i.e. FuelCell Rebel v3, FuelCell RC Elite v2). Together, each aforementioned component blends the New Balance 990‘s DNA with the New England institution’s future in a way sure to be appreciated by savvy and casual consumers alike.
