Oregon’s Nike SB Dunk Low Inspired By National Lampoon’s Animal House

Throughout Nike SB’s decades-long history, winking interpretations of pop culture have been an integral part of their creative identity. Trust that it hasn’t been a playbook that’s been devoid of controversy; the “Freddy Krueger” Dunk became an all-time chase product because objections from the rights-holders put the brakes on a public release. Outside of the label’s walls, Nike’s applications of the same formula have recently popped up on the newswire as coverage of the Air Max 95 “7/11” became a legal drama following a lawsuit between the two companies, now evidently back in the works after a motion to dismiss.

Regardless of where the Swoosh has stepped on landmines in the past, it’s impossible to keep them from tacit nods to beloved pieces of pop culture. As a theory by @ModernNotoriety gained traction on social media, it seems as if the upcoming Oregon “Ducks of a Feather” x Nike SB Dunk Low might just be another chapter in that story. Various details in the shoe point to spins on imagery from the National Lampoon’s Animal House, a late-70’s frat comedy that brought many of the era’s biggest comedic stars together. In a crucial detail, though the film is set in your classic “Anytown, USA,” much of the footage was captured on the University of Oregon’s campus.

The clearest design cue from the movie’s universe comes on the graphic insoles, pulling the typeface from its poster and using it for alternating “Ducks Of A Feather” and “Once A Duck, Always A Duck” mottos. “Shout” on the heels recalls the toga party scene, additionally referenced by laureled tongue tags.

Perhaps most importantly, this shoe initially gained traction for its proximity to the Nike SB Dunk Low “Newcastle.” Though the only named brews in the Belushi-led film are Carling and Schlit, with its frat house setting being an understandably boozy environment on screen, it’s only right that DOAF reaches for one here, in functionally a green-trim palette swap of the original.

Despite new light on what the story behind the shoe is, we’re still lacking much in the way of hard release info for the Ducks of a Feather x Nike SB Dunk Low “Oregon.” While we wait, peruse new in-hand images included below; keep an eye on our Sneaker Release Dates page for more info as we hear of it.
