Although Air Jordan, New Balance and Under Armour made headlines over the last seven days, sneaker conversations were widely dominated by the future of adidas Yeezy.
Ye – the being formerly known as “Kanye West” – has taken to social media over the last few months to air out his grievances with the Three Stripes, which he claims has breached their contract and purposely sabotaged his brand. Memorial Day Weekend had seen the 45-year-old the most boisterous, but he’s topped his Instagram and Twitter antics by giving interviews to both Bloomgberg and CNBC over the last several days, something he hadn’t done much of since his subpar presidential campaign in 2020. Ye doubled down on his dissatisfaction with adidas and Gap on both platforms, with him motioning to terminate his contract with the latter just days after comparing both brands to his “new baby mamas.” The Chicagoan has never been shy about speaking his mind, but his recent string of public outcries has been in a league of its own, especially because the future of the Yeezy brand is up-in-the-air. Although the former “Mr. West” has the cultural influence to take his imprint independent, he doesn’t currently have the infrastructure or team to ensure Yeezys are produced at a level that brands like adidas enable. Only time will tell what happens to the industry-changing partnership, but our bet is that Ye stays with the German sportswear behemoth until at least 2026.
