Despite some of the biggest players in footwear consistently looking for “the next big thing,” the sneaker scene is laden with nostalgia-driven offerings.
On the NIKE, Inc. front, propositions from the 1990s like the Nike Air Trainer SC High (’90) and Air Jordan 11 (’95) emerged in brand new colorways over the last seven days. The latter – which has become a holiday season regular over the last decade – will reportedly take a break from original and heritage-inspired reissues in favor of a “Cherry” style that has split many internet spectators. The 40th anniversary-celebrating Nike Air Force 1 also shared a healthy mix of old school and new school looks.
While not necessarily pertaining to footwear innovation, the Beaverton, Oregon-headquartered institution filed a lawsuit against StockX, the popular after-market platform, for offering “unauthorized” non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The Swoosh’s acquisition of RTFKT and participation in Roblox’s virtual world indicate that the brand is more than open to the burgeoning space, but its lawsuit against StockX demonstrates that it wants to do so via its own terms.
Away from any Jumpman and swoosh logos, adidas, New Balance and Reebok have taken trips down memory lane of their own. Nostalgia for basketball continues to dominate some of these brands’ propositions (i.e. New Balance 550), but partners like Ye – the being formerly known as “Kanye West” – continues to think about the future via his adidas Yeezy line. Now, we hope the former-“Mr. West” finds the peace he needs to move on from discussing his familial turmoil on social media.
