As August gradually comes to a close, several of the top players in the sneaker space revealed new takes on beloved silhouettes.
Nike introduced the previously-seen Dunk Low Disrupt, a fashion-forward take on the 1985 basketball silhouette. While exclusive to women’s sizes, some non-women will surely attempt to pull ‘fits off with the reworked model as its inaugural colorways boast a healthy mix of heritage and modern-day style. Furthermore, given how popular the Dunk Low and SB Dunk have gotten, the update may serve as an alternative to those craving Peter Moore’s design without having to hope for a miracle on the Nike SNKRS app or pay resale prices. Elsewhere, the silhouette’s long-anticipated “Strawberry Cough” iteration was rumored to launch sometime before the year ends, after initially set to launch around the totally-random April 20th date. More non-skateboarding versions of the Dunk also emerged for the remainder of 2020 and beyond, suggesting the revitalized sneaker has plans of staying in the spotlight.
The iconic Air Force 1 dressed up in a couple of Gore-Tex-backed ensembles ahead of autumn. Kyrie Irving unofficially unveiled his seventh signature sneaker, aptly named the Kyrie 7. Despite some spectators criticizing the upcoming model for resembling Irving’s first signature sneaker, it’s difficult not to rally behind what should be one of the best hoops-ready shoes on the market. Supreme also joined the news week as teaser images of its impending Air Max 96 collaboration emerged. While the first-look left much to be desired, it demonstrates the streetwear brand’s affinity for obscure silhouettes within the Swoosh’s storied roster. Although Supreme isn’t touching it (yet), 1992’s Air Raid was also speculated to return by the holiday season.
Throughout much of 2020, the Jordan 1 has been making a case for itself as “Best Retro of the Year”, and the past week saw no difference. Michael Jordan’s first signature sneaker, however, was accompanied by a few pairs its mid-height version, as well as the Jordan 12 and Jordan 13.
Away from NIKE, Inc., New Balance and its collaborators revealed a handful of projects. Among them, Dime, END., BEAMS, and Snow Peak, with the most latter producing the Niobium Concept 1. Sean Wotherspoon and adidas finally (!) shared an official look at the ethically-produced SUPEREARTH. The reworked Superstar boasts animal-free construction and is helping the Three Stripes combat manufacturing-related waste. New York City’s Noah is also helping adidas do just that, but with an SL 20 and SL 72 quartet.
