THE NAME OF THE GAME
Over the past few years, some of the most influential and coveted sneakers have been the brain children of two or more parties. A year into a new decade, collaborations aren’t slowing down. NIKE, Inc. has dominated the space with a cast of high-profile and obscure entities, but it’s never one to abandon previous partners. Los Angeles’ Undefeated unofficially teased a Nike Dunk Low inspired by a Nike Air Force 1 it produced in 2006. Virgil Abloh’s previously-seen Off-White x Nike Air Force 1 “University Gold” also made its rounds across social media, and is being touted as arriving in July.
Away from any swoosh or Jumpman logo, adidas unveiled the latest project from its partnership with Human Made: the adidas PURE Slip-On. Reminiscent of the original PURE BOOST from the mid-2010s, the model mixes performance-proven cushioning with a casual, slip-on design. While some Internet-goers have ridiculed the silhouette for its bland look, others are salivating just thinking about how comfortable the shoe must be. New Balance and DTLR shared news about their latest collaboration, a New Balance 992 dedicated to Washington D.C.
A NEW ERA
Whether consumers are constantly reminded of it or not, innovation is at the core of what every top player in the sneaker space does. And while some endeavors — like the head-scratching Nike Air Max Furyosa — are solo-efforts, others only actualize when multiple parties come together. Enter: Matthew M. Williams’ Nike Zoom MMW 4, a brutalist-informed silhouette ostensibly from the future. While not as outwardly-innovative as the aforementioned pairs, the Nike Zoom Freak 3 ushers in new design language for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Like Nike Basketball models of yesteryear, the silhouette maintains a low-profile while utilizing a mid-foot strap for improved lockdown.
Lastly, adidas YEEZY ushered in refreshing styles of both the YEEZY Foam Runner and YEEZY Slide, arguably its two most-coveted models at the moment. Through respective upcoming “Mineral Blue” and “Glow Green” releases, both designs have given enthusiasts and naysayers alike something more to look forward to than just the same old brown in varying shades.
