Eleven Can’t Miss Sneaker News Headlines from June 5th to June 11th

A NEW CHAPTER

On July 31st, 2020, NIKE, Inc. filed a protective trademark request with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the Air Jordan 1 (and its low-top trims). The action came 35 years after Peter Moore’s design debuted to the market, but was appropriately timed given how popular the sneaker has gotten, and the increase in “homages” that’ve appeared at big-chain retailers and YouTube influencers’ personal online shops. As of June 1st, the USPTO has granted the North American conglomerate protection over Michael Jordan’s first signature sneaker design. While no “cease and desist” cases have been publicized since acquiring a trademark, NIKE, Inc. effectively begins a new chapter in its 57-year-history. If models like the Nike Air Force 1 and Nike Dunk get trademarked, it’ll change the sneaker landscape tremendously.

LeBron James and his NIKE, Inc. family unveiled the Nike LeBron 19 this week, alongside an expansive collection inspired by the “Space Jam: A New Legacy” film. The forthcoming movie marks the rekindling of the NBA’s biggest star with Bugs Bunny and the Tune Squad. James also recently announced that he’s switching his jersey number from #23 to #6, the number the 36-year-old will most likely retire wearing,

Away from any Jumpman and swoosh logos, New Balance unofficially unveiled the latest iteration of its 990 series: the New Balance 990v6. While tech specifications have yet to be disclosed, the Teddy Santis-shared image reveals the line’s sportiest look in its near-40-year-history. The sneaker isn’t set to debut until 2022 to commemorate the aforementioned anniversary, but it’s sure to emerged in more colorways – in-line and collaborative – ahead of its debut.

SUMMER-READY

Summer hasn’t officially begun, but the YEEZY FOAM RUNNER has already made a strong case for itself as the shoe of the season. Momentarily taking a break from the tonal arrangements its commonly donned, the slip-on YEEZY is set to arrive in an…interesting “MX Cream Clay” option during July. This new shoe will be accompanied by a handful of YEEZY restocks, shifting YZY SZN into full-effect.

Ahead of its 40th anniversary, the Air Force 1 has emerged in dozens of ensembles perfect for summer outings. In addition to the ever-popular all-white style, Bruce Kilgore’s decades-old design has recently surfaced in a handful of thematic options that’ll surely get wear between now and late September. Among them, a winged proposition honoring the Goddess of Victory, Nike, which inspired the North American sportswear behemoth’s name.
