As the first official week of 2021 comes to a close, adidas and NIKE, Inc. delivered official (and unofficial) looks at some of their exciting plans.
The Three Stripes hasn’t announced its release, but the UltraBOOST 21 emerged in a handful of colorways ahead of its anticipated February 4th launch. Constructed with six percent more BOOST cushioning, recyclable PRIMEKNIT+ material and all-new adidas LEP (Linear Energy Push) technology, the new model reenergizes the brand’s most popular modern-day franchises. Kanye West’s Yeezy empire also shook up the Internet when news surfaced that one of its most beloved silhouettes–the Yeezy Boost 700–was dropping in price from $300 USD to $240 USD. It’s possible that the move is yet another testament to Mr. West’s original claim that his sneakers with adidas would one day be available to everyone who wants them. Elsewhere, New Balance modernized one of the most recognizable sneakers of the 20th century: the New Balance 574.
Over in Beaverton, OR, NIKE, Inc. dominated the sneaker space with official images of its forthcoming Supreme x Nike SB collaboration; new Air Jordan 1 Low colorways (right after Travis Scott was spotted wearing a previously-unseen pair); and a look at LeBron James‘ PE (player-exclusive) sneaker history; among other endeavors. Yet, the launch of the Nike Dunk By You customization program arguably caused the most commotion. Unsurprisingly, sizes quickly sold out, with dozens of consumer-created-homages appearing on the after-market for double and triple the customs’ retail price. Hundreds of enthusiasts flocked to social media to express their disappointment with how the Swoosh handled the program’s launch, while others expressed their sentiments regarding the start of the Nike Dunk‘s hype dwindling.
